Cotton production in Pakistan is the backbone of Pakistan's economy, as cotton an industrial crop, is grown in 15% of the land during the monsoon months of May to August known as the kharif period and to a smaller scale during February to April. Record production of cotton was reported at 15 million bales (each bale=470 lbs) in the form of ''phutti'' (seed cotton) during 2014-15 which is an 11% rise compared to the previous season (2013–14). Production-wise Pakistan occupies the 4th position among the cotton growers of the world with the first three position held by the Peoples Republic of China, India and the USA in that order. In respect of exports of raw cotton, Pakistan holds third position, the fourth in consumption (about 30 and 40 per cent of its production), but in relation to the cotton yarn it is the largest exporter. ==History== The earliest known historical find of cotton is from Mehrgarh in Quetta in Pakistan which makes it the ancient land of cotton.〔 The Bolan Valley produced cotton and cotton clothes. It is from threads found on a copper bead which belonged to a burial site of the Neolithic period (6,000 BC).〔 This period is known as Old World. The mineralized threads were subject to metallurgical analysis with a combination of a reflected-light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. This analysis revealed that the threads were of cotton (genus of ''Gossypium''). Cotton cultivation became more widespread during the Indus Valley Civilization, which covered parts of present day eastern part Pakistan and northwestern India.〔Stein, Burton (1998). ''A History of India''. Blackwell Publishing. ISBN 0-631-20546-2, p. 47〕 Archaeobotanical evidence of from seeds have been traced to the Indus region of the Harappan civilization. At Harappa evidence of cotton threads are recorded tied to the handle of a mirror, an antiquity from a female burial site, and around a copper razor. It has been recovered from oxidized silver jars and from copper tools from Mahenjadaro.According to the ''Columbia Encyclopedia'':〔("cotton" ) in ''The Columbia Encyclopedia'', Sixth Edition. 2001–07.〕 Cotton purely a cellulose fibre crop, one of the four major crops in the country, is known by popular epithets as “King cotton” and “white gold”.
